College?

College? It’s not all it’s cracked up to be. Although in college you have your own life and own freedom, people make it sound lot better than what it is. College is not all about partying and having fun you have to buckle down and get your stuff done.
When I was in high school everyone would come back and tell me how much fun they were having. Now that I am actually experiencing college I find it not all that fun. In high school you could get away without doing homework sometimes and pass. In college if you miss an exam or assignment you get really far behind. Making this big idea of what college was supposed to be made me very excited to start and make my own life. College in actuality is really hard, you have to be determined and focused. Not only do you have homework but you have to do homework for each class for about two hours for each. I am not saying college is not fun, because it is. After moving out of the house I realized that there is no more mommy and daddy there to support you’re every need. It’s time to be an adult, you have to pay for your car and other necessities that you require. Coming to college there are a lot of things that you may need. Laptops, getting an apartment, school supplies, and car payments all adds up when you are working paycheck to paycheck. Having all these responsibilities at such a young age can really get to you. Stress has been a huge factor on me since I have moved out. Having all this stress has not allowed me to do a lot of the stuff I want. Instead of going out I am at work or doing homework. I feel like I am not getting the same experience as everyone else is.
I just wish I could enjoy my college time instead of always having to do something every second of the day. I want to go out and not have to think about waking up in the morning and going to work or going to work on homework all day. College is a great experience to get out of the house and become and independent adult, but know that there is a lot more responsibility that comes along with it.

  1. I know how you feel. I have 2 jobs and i feel like i never have time to have fun anymore. I work 6 days a week and go to school 5. And plus homework its crazy. I got so use to being able to miss school all the time in highschool, that its hard for me to get myself up to come.

  2. I know what you mean too. I think ICC is not the college place where it provides fun. I think of ICC as get your classes over with before you go on to a bigger college and pay more money for it. I think of this as college but not the college life due to the fact that i am still iving at home and still working 6 out of the 7 days of the week. When i attend college somewhere else i feel that is when my college experience will start. I will not have to worry about working cuz i will be away and i will have more time to do homework and get socialized. We all just have to get through the first 2 years of ICC and do well so we can experience what we thought college is.

  3. I don't know how you feel but i can relate. I was always told that college was fun and that all the parties but when i actually got here it wasn't what i had imagined. I just got to school and then home or to work. I took a college calss during high school and that was fun but now that i'm out of high school and having to attend classes everytime, its hard, because before i always could get away with not going to school.

  4. This is a very thoughtful post, Rozana.

I think we all have an idea of what college is like based on what we have seen in movies. I went to school thinking about Animal House. :) Not really, but still. Catie is right. Because you are at a community college (which is a great financial choice), sometimes you are not able to experience the dorm life/parties, etc. that others do. Are you transferring after two years?
